JULY 2019 BIOBREAKFAST DELAWARE BIOSCIENCE BRETT SANSBURY

BRETT SANSBURY, BS

JUNIOR RESEARCH SCIENTIST
CHRISTIANA CARE | GENE EDITING INSTITUTE

BRETT SANSBURY BIO

Brett Sansbury (BS) is a third-year graduate student at the University of Delaware under the direction of Dr. Eric Kmiec, Director of the Gene Editing Institute at Christiana Care Health System. As part of her thesis research, Ms. Sansbury discovered and elucidated a molecular mechanism in which CRISPR/Cas gene editing can take place outside the cell, a so-called gene editing on a chip. This process has enabled a fundamental understanding of the regulatory circuitry of how CRISPR executes its powerful gene editing function. The system is the only one that enables complete visualization of the genetic outcomes of CRISPR activity. It also allows one to predict the effectiveness of the gene editing tools and helps of the selections of the most appropriate ones to target a human gene, a prescreening step prior to clinical application. In association with her colleague, Amanda Wagner, Brett developed a new process for introducing multiple mutations simultaneously in small and large DNA fragments in a technique that has now been termed CRISPR-Directed Mutagenesis (CDM). This technique has been incorporated into a cancer diagnostic, licensed from Christiana Care for 10 years to the cancer diagnostic company, NovellusDX that has now fully automated the assay for use in its cancer screening service.

PH.D. CANDIDATE
CHRISTIANA CARE | GENE EDITING INSTITUTE

DR. NATALIA RIVERA-TORRES BIO

Dr. Natalia Rivera-Torres (PhD) is a senior research scientist in the Gene editing Institute and a team leader in clinical development of gene editing for cancer. Natalia is credited with elucidating the mechanism of homology directed repair in human cells in a process known as Single-Strand Template Repair (SSTR) or ExACT, EXcision and Corrective Therapy. Her work has led to a fundamental understanding of how gene repair is carried out in human cells and how this process may vary in a variety of different patient samples. She is the scientific liaison with the clinical development program centered on non-small cell lung carcinoma.
