SESSIONS & SPEAKERS
STAND OUT BY STANDING UP: SELF-ADVOCACY FOR THE RELUCTANT
Many talented women today abide by the myth that it’s unbecoming and annoying to talk about their accomplishments. This disinclination among professional women to self-promote has far-reaching consequences. Reluctance to self-advocate can affect referrals, negotiations on work schedules, salary, high-visibility assignments, and promotions. The skill of advocating for yourself is critical for women who want to achieve and maintain positions of leadership in male-dominated organizations.
The purpose of this workshop is to uncover the benefits of advocating for oneself and how this ability to gain organizational visibility leads to career success. The second goal of this workshop is to delve into the fear of being recognized, of being visible and strategies to deal effectively with reluctance to being recognized. Participants learn about the differences between bragging and claiming deserved recognition with confidence and using assertive communication. Participants will devise an action plan to get recognized to achieve career goals.
MORNING MINDFUL MOVEMENT BREAK
Let’s take a few moments to bring focus inward and connect the mind and body. The practice of mindfulness is a powerful tool for cultivating heightened awareness, improved self-regulation, and increased emotional intelligence. Through a series of breathing exercises and deliberate movements, this session will provide you strategies to disentangle yourself from external stresses so you can align your actions and reactions with your true intent.
HELP! I'VE BEEN STUNG BY THE QUEEN BEE!
Most of us have had that moment where we asked ourselves, “Did that just happen?” All too often, our first inclination is to assume we did something wrong, internalizing the other persons’ behavior and blaming ourselves. Perhaps we weren’t clear enough in our communication, or maybe our disposition was offensive. But once we realize that it wasn’t us, the Queen Bee indeed meant to block our pitch or shut us down in front of her peers, everything begins to add up. With a bit of a delayed reaction, we now see how obvious she’s been the whole time. She is the Queen Bee!
The intention of this power session is to provide collective coaching to all of the women who have suffered or are suffering the burning sting of our not-so-fearless leader. Naketa Thigpen will present a deep analysis and deliver tools built on the foundation of emotional and behavioral science. Each participant will walk away with clarity on what activates the Queen Bee Syndrome, learn how to deal with an old school Queen and a Newbie Queen, and receive effective tools to help shift the Queen’s hive toward a culture where you can thrive! This is an immersive experience you don’t want to miss!
FIRESIDE CHAT: A CONVERSATION WITH STEM LEADERS
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT THROUGH VOLUNTEERISM
Volunteering is a valuable opportunity to develop yourself as a leader that is often overlooked – or – considered to take too much time that we don’t have. If we think about it as a planned part of our development, we can target the right opportunities to both give-back and to support our own development goals both early on and throughout our careers. Mary Tilley will discuss some of her own experiences and the key leadership capabilities that come from volunteering both within your company and in external organizations.
BE A CLIMBER: BENEFITS OF ADVANCING YOUR CAREER WITHIN YOUR CURRENT COMPANY
This panel session is directed toward mid-career level professionals and highlights the benefits women uniquely reap when they choose to advance their careers within a single organization. Data shows that women receive higher compensation and improve their future work prospects when they employ a “climber” strategy (seeking advancement within their current company) over a “scanner” strategy (seeking advancement in a different company). Based on personal experiences and from an organizational perspective, panelists will discuss tactics that women specifically can employ to grow within their current company.
BOUNCING BACK FROM A SETBACK: IT'S ALL ABOUT BUILDING RESILIENCE MASTERY
Ready for more grit and resilience, and less overwhelm? Resilience is more than just recovery, it’s a science that shows us how to not only survive a setback, but to thrive and even flourish. Research demonstrates that resilience is a teachable mindset and skillset that few people are taught, but everyone needs, especially during life challenges and times of change. You can’t remove all stress from your life, but you can learn how to stress well! In this session we explore the habits of highly resilient people. As we delve into the mental, emotional, and physical components of resilience you will learn how to manage your inner critic and strengthen your inner warrior. By learning and practicing real‑time resilience skills you can bounce back better in your personal and professional life.
Nina Sherak will introduce you to the Resilience Mastery program, a dynamic research-based journey into the new science of resilience giving you practical resilience skills for your toolbox. The Resilience Mastery corporate program helps participants become more effective and adaptable in the workplace. As participants learn and apply these resilience skills they gain a sense of personal mastery over their lives to better manage internal and external stressors, strategically solve problems, and handle whatever life throws their way with a champion mindset.
