Delaware BioScience Association Celebrates Life Science Accomplishments

NEWARK, Del.--()--The Delaware BioScience Association (Delaware Bio) will host its 2013 Annual Awards Gala on May 22 at the DuPont Country Club, Wilmington, DE. More than 300 academic, government and industry leaders will gather to recognize this year's honorees, who have made significant contributions to the state's life science community.

This year’s award recipients are:

Company of the Year: QPS Holdings, LLC - Benjamin Chien, Ph.D., Chairman, President and CEO

Government Official: The Honorable Christopher Coons, United States Senator

Service: Robert J. Laskowski, M.D., MBA, President and CEO of Christiana Care Health System

Innovation Award: Hui-Yin Harry Li, Ph.D., President of Wilmington PharmaTech

Academic Research Award: Kristi L. Kiick, Ph.D., Professor of Math, Science and Engineering, Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Deputy Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Delaware

Educator of the Year: Higher Education Award: Virginia Balke, Ph.D. Professor of Biology and Chemistry at Delaware Technical Community College

Educator of the Year: K-12 Award: Reese Rigby, High School Science Teacher at Cab Calloway School of the Arts

“Delaware Bio is introducing two new award categories this year – Educator of the Year: Higher Education and Educator of the Year: K-12 – to recognize instructors who have made a notable impact on the way science, technology, engineering and mathematics education is taught in the state,” said Chris Yochim, Chairman of Delaware Bio and Director of External Relations, Strategic Partnering and Business Development at AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals. “These individuals and their peers are planting the seeds that will help foster our future entrepreneurs, scientists, engineers and healthcare professionals.”

“The Annual Awards Gala is one of the rare moments during the year when Delaware’s life science community can come together to celebrate one another’s achievements and reflect on the industry that continues to flourish in the First State,” said Delaware Bio President, Bob Dayton.
