DOVER, DE --- As a part of a Wesley S-STEM, DE-EPSCoR and DE-INBRE community outreach program, undergraduates from the Wesley College science program participated in an event to inspire students in grades 1– 8 to think about the elementary principles in chemistry. The event was held at the Independence School in Newark, DE on Nov.1. Nearly 30 volunteers assisted with the demonstrations and experiments for more than 350 children, as well as their families and troop leaders.
Cannon Scholar, Alexander Jean-Francois, with guidance from Dr. Malcolm D’Souza, professor of chemistry and associate dean of interdisciplinary/collaborative sponsored research led the Wesley effort.
In order to demonstrate that chemistry is involved in daily life, a variety of experiments were chosen as a way to pique the student’s interest. This year’s theme, “Chemistry is Out of This World,” was used as a tool to demonstrate a variety of chemical processes. Experiments included a dry smoke ring launcher, an oil experiment, sodium polyacrylate, magnetic slime, instant snow polymer, and dissolving paper.
The Wesley students that participated in the event are as follows: Khadijah Bland, Rachel Piper, Noah Frahm, Osama Mahmoud, Alexis Moore, Matthew Dina, Shantae Taylor, Sharnice Wallace, Josephine Veeria, Jordan Brockwell, Dinh NGO, and Alexander Jean Francois.
This event is organized by the Delaware American Chemical Society (DE-ACS), and sponsored by the Cannon Scholar National Science Foundation Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (NSF S-STEM), the NSF Delaware Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (DE-EPSCoR), and the National Institute of Health – National Institute of General Medical Sciences – Delaware IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (NIH-NIGMS DE-INBRE) programs.
